Poppin' and Lockin'
I saw a dancer on TV a few weeks ago, auditioning for a talent show. He was poppin', a style of dance I've seen before. But something was special about the way he moved. It was like liquid. He floated across the floor as if it was made of ice. I could see him moving but I had no idea how he was doing it.
I had to learn. I've never been good at singing, but I've always been able to move. I've spent hours watching YouTube video of dancers, hypnotized.
I broke down and registered for classes today at a dance school near my house. I used to pass by and wonder what it was like inside.
It's smaller than I imagined, and the walls are full-length mirrors. My heart raced as I looked at my reflection and imagined learning to move like water.

Stair Fun
Today, like every day, Sungjin, Byeonchae, and I played rock, paper, scissors. Byeongchae lost, which meant that today he was riding the stairs.
I grabbed his feet. He fell on his butt, and Sungjin held onto his feet and dragged him all the way down the stairs it actually doesn't hurt as bad as you'd expect. You remember it when you sit down the next day, though. After his ride to the bottom of the stairs, Byeonchae stood up, rubbing his butt. He was ready for another round.
We played again, and he lost again. His face fell. You could tell that he really felt it after his second ride, but he wasn't done yet. We played again, and I lost. They were about to grab me when the bell rang and I ran off, cackling. There's something about this game that makes us play it every day. There's nothing to win, but it's still fun.

Wednesday, June. Rainy
Rain and Umbrella
History class is always boring. All through class I stared out the window at the pouring rain.
This morning it was clear out, so I didn't bring my umbrella, and now of course it's pouring. I brought an umbrella yesterday after the forecast called for rain, but it was bright and sunny all day. I was the only kid at school with an umbrella, which was embarrassing. Didn't anyone else check the forecast? Anyway, today I left my umbrella at home.
During lunch break the sky's color changed from "swimming pool" to "chalkboard". A bolt of lightning cracked into a pine tree on the school grounds. It hit so close to our classroom that the sound was like a gunshot.
The rain didn't let up, and I watched my friends all leave with their umbrellas. Then I saw someone familiar through the rain-streaked window. It was my jerk brother, coming to pick me up! He's still a jerk, but I guess he can be okay, sometimes.

In-line Skate
The phone interrupted my afternoon nap. It was Sungjin. He wanted to go in-line skating at Expo Park. I'd never been in-line skating before, but I was game. The park was packed with people, despite the early-autumn heat. It wasn't Sungjin's first time skating, that's for sure. He glided around effortlessly. I was covered in sweaty safety gear and moved with all the grace of a cow. I had to struggle to keep up with him, though I pretended to relax whenever he looked back.
The sun beamed down, trying to melt us into the pavement. I could feel my body heat up like a potato in the microwave. After a few laps I was drenched in sweat. Sungjin took pity on me. We plopped down on a bench. He bought two cans of coke from a vending machine and we drank them in the shade of a tree. We talked about our future.
Sungjin had, he told me, an idea for an internet startup. He asked me if I wanted in. I told him that it sounded too risky. I'd rather just work for a company like ordinary people do.

Sunday, May. Sunny.
In My Dream.
After lunch I sat in front of the living-room window and looked outside. The snow-white flowers on the magnolia trees had fallen and browned. Sprays of purple lilac had replaced them. The smell of lilac was a cloud over the entire neighborhood. It came in through the screens of the windows. I sat on the sofa, looking at the lilac trees outside. Suddenly I felt dizzy. I suppose I fell asleep but in my dream I was back in the living room. Subin, a girl I had a crush on who transferred to a school in Seoul, walked in through the door.
We went outside together for a long walk. We talked as we walked, not about anything important.
I have only two strong memories of the dream. One is of walked along a wall that’s outside of my house, running my fingers along it. The other is of the feeling of perfect calm I had while we walked. This feeling stayed with me even after I woke up. I hope she visits me again next Sunday.
Friday, June. Sunny.
On My Wat Home.
I used to walk to school in the morning, but my family moved. Now I usually take the bus in the morning, but I still like to walk home. There’s a stream that runs from school to my house. I follow it home every day. Today there was a fish swimming in it.
She was the size of my palm, and she was gorgeous. Her scales were a fieru golden-red. I had to catch her.
I took off my socks and shoes and waded into the stream. The water was cold, even though it was a hot day. Pebbles slid under my feet. The fish seemed like she was swimming slowly, but I had a lot of trouble getting close to her.
Finally, I pinned her against a rock with one palm. The water was up to my chest and I couldn’t use my other arm. For a minute or two neither of us moved. Then I let her go. I turned around, frowning, and waded back to shore.

[Hamster Heaven]
Back in sixth grade I used to have a hamster named Toto. He liked me and hated my family. He hated my younger brother in particular. I have a blurry memory of my brother crying after Toto bit him. Toto broke the skin and drew blood, which was pretty impressive.
Toto also had a wife, who I named Popo. Together they had twins, Momo and Bobo. Sixth grade me wasn't very creative when it came to names. If I had a hamster now I think I'd name him Socrates.
At any rate, none of the hamsters are still with us. Each one of them has flapped his or her way up to Hamster Heaven. Toto left us on my brother's birthday, which made my brother so much. Maybe he's in Hamster Hell instead.
Sometimes when we're shopping in a big store, I find myself in the pet corner. I look at the hamsters going about their business and remember Toto and his family.
Friday, May. Sunny.
[Invitation]
Sunyong is the shyest boy in our class. Even asking him a simple direct question can make his eyes water. Just before last period, Sunyong passed a note to Sungjin and I. The note asked if we could come hang out at his place after school.
We all took the bus there together. His house was a real two storey detached house, with a yard and a garden.
In the living room there was a black grand piano. Every wall of the room, from floor to ceiling, was lined with books.
His mom gave us mangosteens, which I'd never had before. We played some computer games and spent a bit of time drawing. When it was time to go home, his mom took us aside and talked to us. She wanted him to spend more time around Sungjin and I. We agreed. She really didn't need to give us all of that fancy food. Sunyong's a cool guy once you get to know him. I'd hang out with him, mangosteens or no mangosteens,

My Family
Another ordinary day, the kind of day you know you'll forget. I'm waiting for Dad to come home so he can give me a hand with my English homework. He majored in English in university, but his real passions are drawing and sports. He spends a lot of his free time drawing. It helps him organize his thoughts, he says.
When he's hungry, though, nothing can keep him organized. He gets grumpy about little things, and for some reason it makes him mad if you point out that he hasn't eaten. Mom is more logical. She's got the kind of brain that just sucks up facts, like a sponge. No matter what I talk about, she knows something about it. She's also raelly good at the piano. I wish I could remember things like Mom, but I think I'm more like Dad.
As for my little brother, I don't know who he's more like. He still thinks that picking his nose and reading comics are the two most interesting things in the world. Maybe he's an alien.
Pink Socks
I slept in and was in a rush to get dressed this morning. I managed to put on a pair of my mom's socks without thinking. They're bright salmon-pink. I didn't realize I was wearing them because my shoes completely covered them.
It was Track and Field Day today, but I wasn't chosen to run for anything. I was looking around when I heard my captain call my name. He wanted me to do the high jump. I'd never high-jumped before, but I said I'd give it a shot. As it turns out, I'm a pretty good jumper. The bar got higher higher, but I managed to make it to the very last round. One peg higher and I'd set a school record.
The captain told me to take my shoes off so I could get a better grip. As soon as I started I realized which socks I was wearing. I whipped off my shoes and ran for the bar before anyone could get a good look at my feet. I exploded into the air. My body cleared the crossbar. Then I felt the tip of my stupid pink socks clip it. The crossbar fell off its pegs. I didn't set a record, and I got a new nickname, all at once. Now I'm "Pink Socks" Great.
