Diving

The dog days of summer are here. The wind blows like flames through open windows. I was lying on my back trying to do as little as possible. Then Byeongchae called. He lives by the riverside. His family has a pear orchard. He invited Sungjin and I over. We ate pears all morning, but they weren't ripe. They were bitter and made our stomachs hurt. We ate them anyway, to show each other how tough we were.

When the sun was directly overhead, we went to the river. I didn't know my friends were such good swimmers. Byeonchae challenged us to a diving competition. I was terrified, but I couldn't refuse. We climbed up a tall rock together.

Byeonchae jumped off first, screaming like Tarzan. Then Sungjin did a backflip.

It was my turn. I pretended I wasn't scared, and launched into the water with my arms straight out like Superman.

The water turned to concrete and smacked me in the stomach.

My friends had to drag me to shore like a piece of driftwood. I lay on the shoreline like a sack of barley, clutching my stomach and groaning.

Summer Break Plan

I woke up, groggy and starving, at 11 this morning. Usually Mom wakes up at 8 for breakfast. Today nobody woke me up and the house seemed abandoned. I walked into the kitchen, expecting to find something to eat. There was a mountain of ditty dishes heaped up in the sink and only crumbs on the table. What happened? Mom was still sleeping, so I tried to wake her up. "Mom's tired today," she said, still half-asleep. She'd been out with some friends of hers from high school. "If you're hungry, order in some Jajanmyeon." she said. The delivery guy got to my house almost suspiciously fast. I ate the Jajangmyeon, which was a bit cold and stiff.

Then I surfed the internet listlessly. Suddenly, it hit me.

Summer vacation was slipping through my fingers. I dragged myself away from the computer and went out for a stroll, to think.

I began to hash out a plan for the rest of the summer. I was about to write it down when Byeongchae called.

He had just gotten the new FiFA game. I dropped my pencil and ran over to his house.
