Poppin' and Lockin'
I saw a dancer on TV a few weeks ago, auditioning for a talent show. He was poppin', a style of dance I've seen before. But something was special about the way he moved. It was like liquid. He floated across the floor as if it was made of ice. I could see him moving but I had no idea how he was doing it.
I had to learn. I've never been good at singing, but I've always been able to move. I've spent hours watching YouTube video of dancers, hypnotized.
I broke down and registered for classes today at a dance school near my house. I used to pass by and wonder what it was like inside.
It's smaller than I imagined, and the walls are full-length mirrors. My heart raced as I looked at my reflection and imagined learning to move like water.

Stair Fun
Today, like every day, Sungjin, Byeonchae, and I played rock, paper, scissors. Byeongchae lost, which meant that today he was riding the stairs.
I grabbed his feet. He fell on his butt, and Sungjin held onto his feet and dragged him all the way down the stairs it actually doesn't hurt as bad as you'd expect. You remember it when you sit down the next day, though. After his ride to the bottom of the stairs, Byeonchae stood up, rubbing his butt. He was ready for another round.
We played again, and he lost again. His face fell. You could tell that he really felt it after his second ride, but he wasn't done yet. We played again, and I lost. They were about to grab me when the bell rang and I ran off, cackling. There's something about this game that makes us play it every day. There's nothing to win, but it's still fun.

Wednesday, June. Rainy
Rain and Umbrella
History class is always boring. All through class I stared out the window at the pouring rain.
This morning it was clear out, so I didn't bring my umbrella, and now of course it's pouring. I brought an umbrella yesterday after the forecast called for rain, but it was bright and sunny all day. I was the only kid at school with an umbrella, which was embarrassing. Didn't anyone else check the forecast? Anyway, today I left my umbrella at home.
During lunch break the sky's color changed from "swimming pool" to "chalkboard". A bolt of lightning cracked into a pine tree on the school grounds. It hit so close to our classroom that the sound was like a gunshot.
The rain didn't let up, and I watched my friends all leave with their umbrellas. Then I saw someone familiar through the rain-streaked window. It was my jerk brother, coming to pick me up! He's still a jerk, but I guess he can be okay, sometimes.

In-line Skate
The phone interrupted my afternoon nap. It was Sungjin. He wanted to go in-line skating at Expo Park. I'd never been in-line skating before, but I was game. The park was packed with people, despite the early-autumn heat. It wasn't Sungjin's first time skating, that's for sure. He glided around effortlessly. I was covered in sweaty safety gear and moved with all the grace of a cow. I had to struggle to keep up with him, though I pretended to relax whenever he looked back.
The sun beamed down, trying to melt us into the pavement. I could feel my body heat up like a potato in the microwave. After a few laps I was drenched in sweat. Sungjin took pity on me. We plopped down on a bench. He bought two cans of coke from a vending machine and we drank them in the shade of a tree. We talked about our future.
Sungjin had, he told me, an idea for an internet startup. He asked me if I wanted in. I told him that it sounded too risky. I'd rather just work for a company like ordinary people do.

Sunday, May. Sunny.
In My Dream.
After lunch I sat in front of the living-room window and looked outside. The snow-white flowers on the magnolia trees had fallen and browned. Sprays of purple lilac had replaced them. The smell of lilac was a cloud over the entire neighborhood. It came in through the screens of the windows. I sat on the sofa, looking at the lilac trees outside. Suddenly I felt dizzy. I suppose I fell asleep but in my dream I was back in the living room. Subin, a girl I had a crush on who transferred to a school in Seoul, walked in through the door.
We went outside together for a long walk. We talked as we walked, not about anything important.
I have only two strong memories of the dream. One is of walked along a wall that’s outside of my house, running my fingers along it. The other is of the feeling of perfect calm I had while we walked. This feeling stayed with me even after I woke up. I hope she visits me again next Sunday.
Friday, June. Sunny.
On My Wat Home.
I used to walk to school in the morning, but my family moved. Now I usually take the bus in the morning, but I still like to walk home. There’s a stream that runs from school to my house. I follow it home every day. Today there was a fish swimming in it.
She was the size of my palm, and she was gorgeous. Her scales were a fieru golden-red. I had to catch her.
I took off my socks and shoes and waded into the stream. The water was cold, even though it was a hot day. Pebbles slid under my feet. The fish seemed like she was swimming slowly, but I had a lot of trouble getting close to her.
Finally, I pinned her against a rock with one palm. The water was up to my chest and I couldn’t use my other arm. For a minute or two neither of us moved. Then I let her go. I turned around, frowning, and waded back to shore.
