[ The World Times ] History of Food Delivery
Food delivery is a service where a customer can order food and have it delivered from a restaurant, store, or company. Orders are typically placed through websites or phone apps, and items available for delivery range from restaurant entrees, cafe drinks, to groceries. With foods sealed in packages such as bags or boxes, delivery workers usually get to requested destinations via cars, bikes, or motorized scooters.
The earliest food delivery service comes from Korea, being recorded in July 1768 during the Joseon era. Scholar Hwang Yun-seok mentioned in one of his books that he ordered naengmyeon, or cold buckwheat noodles, for lunch with his colleagues the day after taking his civil service examination.
Naengmyeon was a delicacy that became popular among noblemen, leading many experts to believe that the dish's rising popularity led to the introduction of a delivery service for it. This belief is supported by an example from an 1871 book by Lee Yu-won. It mentions that King Sunjo of Joseon ordered his servants to buy naengmyeon and bring it back to the palace while moon watching.
In the West, legend says that the first delivery for pizza happened in 1889 in Naples. After getting sick during her trip, Queen Margherita of Savoy requested for traditional Italian food. Chef Raffaele Esposito made a pizza resembling the Italian flag and delivered it personally to the queen, as royals most likely would not dine at a pizzeria. As the first pizza delivery history, the incident also gave birth to the Margherita pizza.
