[ The World Times ] Jewelry for Men
In the past, it was relatively common to find men adorned with jewelry. Look at old paintings of royalty and you'll find gold pins, rings, and necklaces on every man, at least the rich ones. In modern times, as hip hop culture has become popular, chains and rings have enjoyed a renaissance. More recently, however, something different is happening. Jewelry once reserved for women is showing up on male celebrities in what may be a sign of things to come.
At recent award shows, concerts, fashion shows, and other public events, certain celebrities are pushing the boundaries of traditional fashion. Though famous men have been wearing jewelry for years, some are now wearing items that were previously believed to be exclusively feminine. In doing so, they may be shifting the way we think about not only fashion but also gender norms. Two pieces in particular, the brooch and the pearl necklace, seem to be especially popular.
A brooch is a large gold and gemstone-encrusted pin that is often worn on the lapel of a woman's coat or near the shoulder of a dress. The trend was started in 2017, when fashion trailblazer Pharrell Williams wore one to an award show. Recently, other men have begun wearing brooches as well, naturally transitioning them to their suit lapels. Jason Momoa, star of Game of Thrones and Aquaman, was recently spotted wearing one, as was fellow superhero Chadwick Boseman of Black Panther.
The other newly popular piece of apparently unisex jewelry is the pearl necklace. Harry styles, one of the members of the former group One Direction, has been making waves in the fashion world for a few years thanks to his gender-bending styles. His latest look is a pearl necklace, which doesn't seem feminine at all when worn by a man. Another icon from the hip hop world, ASAP Rocky, has also been seen wearing pearl necklaces. In his case, it feels like a natural evolution from the gaudy fashion of hip hop, but it is a fresher look than the traditional gold and diamond chains. Other celebrities that have worn pearl necklaces are Jaden Smith, the Jonas Brothers, and of course Pharrell Williams.
Though traditionally feminine jewelry may not be for every man, these celebrities are pushing boundaries in ways that will make the fashion of the future more interesting and less predictable.
